defending Zidane
i've become increasingly unpopular with my friends in general
these past few months but with a handful of people despite my
"bad" behavior has judged me by my intention not my behavior.
maybe the keepers have proven themselves.
i'm writing now in white heat after France lose out to Italy at the
World Cup Finals. I was for France this time though if you asked
me 12 years ago i would have been a solid Italian fan (i still have
a gorgeous original nike italy '94 jersey)
i'll quote this article: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/s occer/specials/world_cup/2006/07/09/ital y.france.final.ap/index.html
Outplayed for an hour and into extra time, the Italians won it after French captain Zinedine Zidane was ejected in the 110th minute for a vicious butt to the chest of Marco Materazzi.
It was the ugliest act of a tournament that set records for yellow and red cards, diving and, at times, outright brutality.
Why did Zidane do it? Here is my speculations at the moment:
Zidane plays as a friend of mine has said "He doesn't seem like he's playing football at the
highest level but playing at a neighborhood park leisure Sunday football"
His calm exterior even at the most critical top flight games is easy to associate him to be
a buddhist (he's a practicing Muslim) but that doesn't diffuse the passion in a man.
He has head butted in the past one i remember so clearly while he was playing for Juve
at a champion's league match where there was a hard tackle and he was battling to
win the ball both players were tough on each other but Zidane's head-butt at the heat
of the moment was uncalled for and he rightly deserved to be red carded and suspended
for 3 games or more.
This time he as another friend commented said "you could see he took a moment to think
what he will do then he did it"
yes it was meditated but we're not privy to know what went on... this is what i saw
Marco Materazzi was holding him (which defenders shouldn't do but they get away with
it) the handling didn't seem malicious but there was an exchange of words.
what i think could have happened: (note this is purely fictional)
Zidane: Stop holding me, play fair
Materazzi:replies something and adds an insult possibly in Italian
thinking Zidane being a Frenchman wouldn't understand.
But Zidane played for Juve for a couple of years and could very well
speak italian. So he thought will i let him (Materazzi) get away with
that "statement"*?
Zidane: No. i won't let him and so he headed butted the Italian rather
than taking cheap shots at him during the game or other acts of
alternative revenge schemes he decided to take a direct approach.
Now it's ugly to see something like that in Football which is such a
beautiful game and Zidane playing his natural role only contributes
and i would even say raises the level of the game with his weaving
magic.
Unlike the Juve attack there was a lot of physical contact this one hardly
had any but Zidane hit him and he was kicked out of the game, if he
stayed on he surely would have a been a penalty taker and well could
have beaten Buffon as he did at the 7th min. Instead he leaves the pitch
then...

Zidane leaving the pitch being red carded passes by the trophy he
once held in his hands (excellent pic from fifaworldcup.com)
A couple of world cups ago i remember the young Patrick Klivert was
red carded at a game with an attack as well i think on a South Korean
when asked after why he did it, Patrick said that the whole time he
was being guarded the Korean kept abusing him calling him a rapist
(at that time there was a rape case against the Dutchman)
what could have Materazzi say?
was it about his religion?
his wife? He being over the hill?
his family? his playing style?
etc...
hope to learn about it soon from these sites
which has helped me fill my appetite for the World Cup

France without the captain, reduced to 10 men fought on
created chances but it ended in penalties which is a lottery
but the odds were stacked against us.
Buffon vs. Barthez (no contest Buffon is a fantastic keeper
and Barthez comes out to be a clown too often with his
fumbles)
Henry was subbed and David Trezeguet hasn't been
playing so maybe a little off.
Italy win and maybe this is their saving grace because
tom a verdict will come regarding the match fixing
scandals at Seria A which will really rocked the state
of Football in Italy.
==== analogy
If a guy makes bastos a girl i'm with i think i'll
do the same thing... i don't care if it happened
hours ago i'll hunt him down and giving him a
beating which he deserves.

"Zidane ano ba yan laro canto yan, taga Tondo?"
read up on the humble beginnings of this man
and you might not put him past playing in
the Tondo equivalent in France so maybe a
tough fist flying player is still in him.
===incident
zidane took a hard knock, my doc friend
mentioned that it looks like he dislocated
his shoulder... he asked to be taken off
but he stayed on (patrick viera was already
subbed with a hamstring injury)
he wasn't playing as well as he was but
you could tell he was still battling it out
giving his all... hmmm maybe he was telling
Marco not to hold him because of his
injury...
